Auditions will be held at The Windmill Theatre, Blatchington Mill School on SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 9.30am – 6.00pm.

All acts will be asked to play one song to a judging panel of representatives from the music industry (originals preferred but well-worked cover versions accepted).

Successful performers will be invited to take part in either Sounds from the City on 21st & 22nd March @ Pavilion Theatre or Teenspirit on 26th May @ Concorde2.

New South East Bridge between Arts, Culture and Education

We need your help! From April 2012, Arts Council England will be funding 10 new Bridge Organisations across England to provide a regional lead and support the delivery of their goal relating to children and young people’s engagement in the Arts and Culture and to act as a‘bridge’ with the education/youth sectors and embedding Arts Award and Artsmark in that work.

Artswork is the new Bridge Organisation for the South East. Arts Council England has allocated £1.5m per year to enable Artswork to deliver the Bridge role, working in and through partnerships across the region to create increased access to the Arts and Culture with, for and by children and young people. Artswork will be working closely in collaboration with Arts and Cultural organisations, with local authorities, with those involved in education, with the voluntary and community sectors and with practitioners.

Our first undertaking is to gain an understanding of current provision, sector strengths and needs, areas of least engagement, and challenges and barriers. This survey is the beginning of what will be an ongoing conversation across the arts/culture, education and CYP sectors.

The Bridge role is a new one. With your assistance, we hope to identify the places in the region where we can have the greatest impact; to better understand needs and priorities; and to gain information about the opportunities that already exist for working together and sharing resources and expertise.

This survey is part of the intelligence gathering phase. The survey has between 20 and 30 questions; most are very quick to answer – a few might require some research about the organisations you work with or the numbers of CYP accessing the Arts and Culture.

Bass and Soprano Auditions For Vocal Explosion Music Choir

Singers do NOT have to be able to read music but must have a good voice, a strong sense of rhythm and be able to hold a harmony. As well as creating a high quality sound we also aim to have a good time working in a focussed way with discipline & humour!

*Attendence*

We require a commitment of at least two terms (normally each of a 10 week duration).
We tend to gig around the South East doing on average 2 to 4 gigs per term.
Attendance at rehearsal needs to be AT LEAST 80% and we expect absentees to learn their parts at home from recordings.
We have recordings of many of the song parts that can be downloaded to help you learn new material.

*Where & When*

Sessions are held at BHASVIC, Brighton on a Tuesday evening, beginning on 17th January.
The cost is £7 with concession of £5 for students & those solely on basic state benefits. Fees need to be paid by cheque either in entirety at the beginning of each term or in two instalments of five weeks

*Performance Custome*

Is open to your own style but obligatory-within reason!. It consists of tops in pinks or oranges or reds/maroon without a pattern with black bottoms.

Music Therapy in the Community: A Practical Look at Skill-Sharing

This will be of interest to anyone who is planning, currently involved in, or who has undertaken skill-sharing initiatives using their music therapy skills, in this country or abroad.

A number of therapists who have worked on very different projects will present their experiences. All will keep a very practical focus to their presentations and honestly share not only their successes, but also the challenges they faced. The afternoon will include a workshop, a chance to think about what can and can’t be undertaken by non-musicians or people who can't access full music therapy training, and how to approach this.

Official Announcement: Rhythmix and Syco

Both Syco and Rhythmix have been in touch and this matter has been positively resolved. Syco commends all the good work that Rhythmix does, and are happy to make a donation to the charity. As previously agreed, Syco will also withdraw the application for the trademark. Rhythmix wish Little Mix the best in their endeavours for The X Factor and would like to thank Syco for their donation and for withdrawing their trademark application.

Rhythmix would like to thank all the members of the public who supported the Charity in seeking to resolve this matter, and to thank Unity PR.

Chief Executive Mark Davyd said "We are very pleased this has been brought to an amicable conclusion. These are difficult times for charities and other third sector organisations, and we are very pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement with SyCo to put this matter behind us." Mr Davyd confirmed that all donations made to the Charity by the public in the last few weeks would be used to support frontline projects working with vulnerable young people, as was the declared intention during the fundraising campaign.

Rhythmix is launching a #CowellMustPay social media campaign to help raise money towards the £8,000 legal fees incurred to date, after Simon Cowell’s lawyers unsuccessfully tried to force the charity to relinquish its name in a trademark dispute.

Alistair McGowan, along with other famous faces, is calling on the British public to VOTE for the music charity this Saturday, instead of the remaining X Factor acts, in a show of solidarity against the treatment received at the hands of Simon Cowell’s Simco Ltd.

Cowell’s firm has used trademark laws to potentially put the South East-based charity out of business, and has left the charity with legal fees of £8,000 – an amount that could be used for 120 hours or 10 days of music training for disabled and vulnerable youth.

The Rhythmix ‘Cowell Must Pay’ fundraising campaign will launch on Saturday 12th November from 9.30pm, during the live broadcast of the X Factor show. In order to support Rhythmix, text RTMX11 £1 to 70070 from Saturday 12th November to donate £1. This will help pay the charity’s hefty legal bill.

We call on X Factor viewers to text to help Rhythmix in lieu of their usual text vote for X factor’s acts.

The #CowellMustPay campaign is being run – pro bono – by creative agency Unity. Unity co-founder Nik Done said “This is a classic case of David vs Goliath and this time Cowell Must Pay”.

Another Open Letter to Simon Cowell

Dear Simon

Rhythmix and the X Factor: Part 2

Well, here we are again.

To summarise; on 23 September 2011 Simco (a company largely owned by you) tried to take control of the identity Rhythmix for use by some contestants on The X Factor UK using trademark methods available to them in Europe. Simco and X Factor did this in the full knowledge that "Rhythmix" was an existing trademarked name of a music charity that works with vulnerable young people. The use of the name was announced on the X Factor on 1 October, and the Charity wrote to Simco, Talkback Thames, ITV, Syco, X Factor and their legal representatives repeatedly in the subsequent three weeks asking for the name to be changed or for Simco to stop seeking to control the identity. On 26 October at 9am we wrote publicly to you personally asking that all the people involved in the programme stop pretending that the Charity was causing a fuss about nothing and simply change the name. At 5.43pm that day the name of the girl band was changed.

Many people reading this new open letter will immediately be thinking "well, what does this Charity want now? They've changed the name". Unfortunately, whilst your company Simco and your programme The X Factor have managed to stage a PR event publicly changing the name of your contestants, actually the legal position hasn't changed at all, and neither has the outcome for the Charity.

Firstly, despite writing repeatedly to your legal representatives for two weeks asking that the public announcement of the name change be replicated by the actual action required (withdrawing the trademark application) as of 8 November Simco are still seeking to exclusively trademark the name Rhythmix - a copy of your application can be viewed online here: http://esearch.oami.europa.eu/copla/trademark/data/010288843

There can be only two reason for this. 1) Simco intend to change the name of the band back at some future date or 2) Simco and/or its legal representatives want to use their control of the identity to force the charity to accept terms and conditions before permitting the Charity to continue to trade.

Secondly, Simco and your legal representatives are choosing not to respond to any of the formal letters sent to them. This is despite the legal problems between your company and the Charity being caused entirely by the actions of Simco, despite the thousands of pounds in legal fees that are the responsibility of Simco, and despite the failure to conclude the matter properly. Why won't they respond? Because the legal advice is that the Charity cannot afford to pursue Simco through the courts, so the best way to "win" this matter is to not deal with it and wait for the Charity's money to run out.

Bluntly, that legal advice is correct. This Charity isn't prepared to spend thousands of pounds forcing Simco to "do the right thing". We won't be sending you any more legal letters. We won't be asking Simco any more times not to take our identity. We won't write any more letters to you or to Simco asking that you or they cover the unjustified legal costs they have forced upon the Charity.

Whether you eventually complete your trademark application or not, the Charity intends to continue to stage Rhythmix concerts, make Rhythmix recordings, and print the word Rhythmix on paper and t-shirts. We won't ask your permission, and if you or your company seek to prevent the Charity in engaging in its normal activities we will simply notify the public of your actions and let them decide what should be done.

The legal costs are £8,000. This is equivalent to 120 hours of music making and social interaction for vulnerable young people that benefit from the Charity's work. It is , coincidentally, equivalent to roughly three seconds of advertising time during the X Factor. Since Simco don't apparently feel that their actions are their responsibility, we therefore invite any of your main corporate advertisers to consider cutting their advertising with X Factor by a full 3 seconds and donate that money to cover the legal costs Simco generated. The actions taken and the attitude displayed by Simco throughout this matter demonstrate a level of arrogance and lack of responsibility that we believe should concern you as the public face of the company. You can choose to take an interest in this matter or you can choose not to. Whatever you choose to do, the aim of this letter is to ensure that both you and the public are fully aware of the actions of your company.

Dear Simon

Rhythmix and the X Factor

On 23 September 2011 Simco (a company largely owned by you) lodged an application in Europe to trademark the name "Rhythmix" for use by the programme X Factor. At the time of lodging that application X Factor and Simco were fully aware that "Rhythmix" was an existing trademarked name of a music charity that works with vulnerable young people.

Rather than seeking any discussion with the Charity, considering any of the moral implications of their actions, or checking with the Charity whether the pursuit of an exclusive trademark might have a negative impact on the activities of the Charity, Simco and their legal representatives apparently sought a way to use the law to circumvent the trademark of the Charity.

We don't buy this media invention of you as Mr Nasty. Your wikipedia entry explains at length your involvement with children's charities, and we commend you for it. But equally we don't believe that you are unaware of the way your own company is acting. Or maybe your staff are trying to "manage" it for you?

By pursuing these trademarks Simco is forcing the Charity to take legal action to ensure it can continue to exist and offer opportunities to young people to create and perform their own music. Maybe those young people won't be on your programmes, or your record label, but the music they create is important to them.

Rhythmix the charity has worked with over 40,000 young people in the last twelve years. All of that work is placed at risk by the actions of your company. Every legal action the Charity has to take to protect itself from Simco is a project that won't happen. A project that could make a difference to a vulnerable young person. A large number of the public reading this will see it for exactly what it is; a ridiculously overblown storm in a tiny teacup. Simco are solely responsible for that situation and you can resolve it in a matter of seconds.

For that reason, Simon, we are personally asking you to sort this problem out in the quickest and simplest way:

Just change the name.

Seminar to explore film, learning and disability- 15th September 2011

Creative Partnerships at the University of Sussex are holding a seminar to discuss film, learning and disability on Thursday 15 September 2011 at The Stade Hall in Hastings, 2.30pm-7pm.
It will be an opportunity to hear about the recent Here and There: Hidden Stories project as well as hearing from a variety of young people, filmmakers and educators who have worked with film, as well as watch films they have produced and find out more about filmmaking with young people with special needs.

Beth Hill is a music graduate specialising in singing. She has been a primary teacher for over 20 years with experience of Early Years, Key Stages 1 and 2, and using music in the wider curriculum. Since 2001 she has worked as an Advisory Teacher with The Voices Foundation and has led in-school programmes in many London and South East Authorities. As a senior advisory teacher she also oversees all the Foundation’s projects in this region. She has now produced an Early Years book.

Safety Net Kids Website Goes Live!

We are the Safety Net Kids! We call ourselves that because we have all been involved with Safety Net at looking at things that make us feel unsafe and working on them ourselves. To be safe means to be comfy and not scared. We do things like standing up to bullies without being mean, listening to our bodies as they are clever at spotting danger and thinking about things we can do to make the areas where we live safer.

We decided Safety Net should have a better website because we want other children to know about what we do so you can come along to one of our groups or if you are a bit shy you can still learn about helping yourself to be safe from looking at what we put on the website. A blend of young up and coming performers, rappers, DJs and other musicians from the Sussex area, will showcase their skills on an eye-catching converted airstream caravan on *Saturday the 30th April from 12-5pm at Jubilee Square, next to Brighton Library.

Established in 2004, AudioActive provides training in the production of contemporary popular music and arts for children and young people, through in-house and outreach work in Brighton & Hove and throughout the South East.

Sound on the day will be supplied by the youth run PA hire project.

Sounds Enterprising, a social enterprise set up by a group of young people who applied for funding supported by AudioActive to start their own PA hire business.

Reflections from Graham Dowdall: Know Your Dance and Urban Genres Training MLSE

One of the rewards and also challenges of the work we do is being able and having to keep up with all the changes in music as times progress. As someone old enough to remember the Beatles (old Liverpool band) first releases its fantastic to me that new musics continue to emerge that excite me and that all add something to the incredible stew of music that we can dine on.

To engage with our clients in an age where music is exchanged by a plethora of methods and technologies we really need to have some understanding of how these new musics are made and also the context in which they are being made. Its against that backdrop that I have been developing a training strand around urban musics and how they have arrived at the place they are now. I know it'll restart an old debate but it definitely seems to be that its been in the areas of dance and urban styles that the greatest developments have occurred over the last few years - partly as they are, more than rock, technology driven styles and partly because they tend to emerge from the cultural melting pots of our great cities whether it be Grime (East End of London) Trip-hop (Bristol) Dubstep (S London) etc.

I really believe that the tools of a community musician need to include a wide knowledge of musics ranging from the blues to minimalism to garage rock to musique concrete to UK garage and everywhere in between or beyond and doing the research for the urban genres sessions never ceases to amaze me in terms of the connections and threads that run through music. Robert Johnson to the White Stripes might not seem such a big step but Pierre Schaeffer to Public Enemy, Bessie Smith to James Blake or Steve Reich to Donna Summer might seem a huge leap but once you listen to the soundworlds you realise that the threads that connect music over a hundred years are really evident but often not conscious.

As well as loving nearly all music (people will know my problems with the really challenging stuff - Celine Dionne or Oasis) I've also always been fascinated by youth culture having witnessed teddy boys become rockers, mods becoming skinheads, punks becoming bankers, hippies moving to Brighton etc as well as having had some of the dodgiest haircuts in history myself and the cultural connections between music and style that give young people a real sense of belonging remain as relevant today as they ever were. I love delivering this stuff, reminding people of the roots of so many current styles but also of the endless creativity that drives music today as it ever did.

These are exciting times for music if you can see past the plethora of Landfill Indie and Reality show dross, and Britain, at the vanguard of multi-culturalism remains at the vanguard too of new music - Wonky, Hynagogic, Aqua-crunk, UK Bass anyone ?

"Brighton Music Hub" is a 2-year music programme delivered by Crew Club after receiving funding from Youth Music. It will include master classes in live performance, setting up a record label and writing & releasing albums produced in our studio, being delivered in partnership with Audio Active, Rhythmix, Brighton Centre and Concorde 2 as well as other venues/partners tbc. The aim of Brighton Music Hub is:

To give young people in challenging circumstances the opportunity to take control of and run their own youth music provision in Whitehawk, through a programme of development and delivery in the disciplines of performance, production, business and leadership, resulting in a legacy of improved music skills, provision and equality.

Part of the project is to set up a live information hub, which lists the latest local music opportunities available to all young people. Its aim is to increase young people's access to music, help them engage with learning and form a thriving musical community in the area.

Based at the Hollington Youth Centre in Hastings, the provision boasts a brand new rehearsal room, a further practice room and a large selection of musical instruments. Through additional funding received from children's charity Youth Music, it will offer a broad range of activities to help develop young people's musical skills.

Led by professional musicians, activities include workshop and taster sessions focusing on different types of music and instruments. Centre users will also benefit from mentoring, have the opportunity to take part in accredited training, attend open rehearsal sessions and develop and record music demos. And the sessions will help prepare them for delivering live performances of their work at other music venues in the town.

New Brighton Music Hub Blog

Brighton Music Hub is a brand new Youth Music project based at the Crew Club's studio and live space. Aimed at musicians, producers and song-writers age 13-19, the project will help develop skills in performance, production, business and leadership. Young people will have the opportunity to be involved in an album release, set up a record label, get info about local music opportunities and have help performing at gigs.

It also acts as a central point for other music organisations to post info about courses/events/jobs that would be of interest to young people.

Keith Willis

We are very saddened by the news that Keith Willis has died.

Keith was one of the founders of Rhythmix, and the inspiration behind much of the work the organisation carries out. He took huge pride in the work of the Charity, and was regularly on hand to guide and steer us as the project developed. He was a dedicated musician with a particular fondness for Mahler and choral music; honorary music adviser to the Gustav Mahler Society UK, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, creator of the Mahler Project, the baton of the Surrey Youth Orchestra... the list is almost endless.

Keith had a genuine love of the arts that he wanted everyone to have the chance to share, always seeking to enthuse and encourage young people to become involved. More than anything else, Keith was simply one of the good guys who make the world a better place. He will be sorely missed by everybody here at Rhythmix and our thoughts are with his family.

Kent’s music stars of the future aged 11 and 18 are displaying their talents online in Music Clash ’11.

MusicLeader is pleased to announce the launch of Child Protection Awareness in Music – an online training programme for musicians who work with children and young people.

Child Protection Awareness in Music is the latest in the NSPCC’s EduCare series of distance learning courses. It has been produced by the NSPCC and the Musicians Union, in partnership with MusicLeader and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

The training programme uses short films to show a variety of good and bad practice examples, which are available to watch online. It will help anyone teaching music to children and young people to gain a better understanding of their child protection responsibilities and avoid situations that could lead to accusations of misconduct.

Child Protection Awareness in Music covers a wide range of scenarios that are relevant to both school and out-of-school settings, including:

•Handling inappropriate communications with children and young people
•How to demonstrate playing techniques
•Dealing with a difficult group situation
•What to do when you have concerns that a child / young person may be suffering abuse or self-harming

MusicLeader recommends that anyone working in music with children and young people complete this basic introduction to child protection. This course provides fantastic value for money at only £15 plus VAT and will only take two to three hours to complete. All learners receive a certificate of achievement upon completion of the course – a great way to help them evidence to employers / customers that they have essential knowledge and understanding in this area.
